Company Governance
In the typical City of London tradition, the Company is led each year by a Master, supported by a Deputy Master, Treasurer and Wardens together forming the Court of the Company. All who hold a position on the Court are Freemen of the City of London. The Company is operationally guided by the Clerk who runs the Company and is a position that often held by the same person for continuity for more than one year.
The Court functions much like a board of directors, providing strategic guidance, stewardship and support to the various committees for the year ahead while nurturing the camaraderie and charitable spirit that lie at the heart of the Freeman ethos.
The Court’s term runs from May to April, beginning with the Installation Ceremony, a formal yet convivial occasion held during our annual Masters’ Banquet. This Banquet is one of the highlights of our calendar, marking the ceremonial handover of leadership and celebrating the achievements of the outgoing Master.
All members, their guests, and friends of the Company are warmly invited to attend the Masters’ Banquet and other events throughout the year — moments where fellowship, heritage, and good company come together in true Freeman spirit.

The Freedom of the City of London
The Freedom of the City of London is one of the oldest surviving civic honours in the world, dating back to the 13th century. Historically, it granted individuals the right to trade within the City’s ancient walls and to participate in its civic life. Today, it remains a mark of distinction and connection - a symbolic link between the modern citizen and the City’s proud history of commerce, craftsmanship, and community service.
Those who hold the Freedom, known as Freemen, may belong to a Livery Company or a Guild, organisations that originally represented the trades and professions of the City. These Companies, including the Honourable Company of Freemen of the City of London of North America, now exist to preserve fellowship, uphold the City’s traditions, and foster charitable and educational work within their communities.
